Ignorance is bliss

We found a great little surf break in Byron Bay, called Wategos Bay. It’s a busy spot packed mostly with longboarders. As a beginner, I usually don’t like crowds; I’m scared of getting in their way and causing an accident…. But these guys seem to be a very mellow and friendly bunch, and they don’t seem to mind sharing the waves with beginners. So I have been enjoying the company! We’d been hanging out at Wategos twice a day since Sunday and it’s always pretty packed. So, when we arrived on Tuesday afternoon and there wasn’t a soul in the water, I wondered where everyone was? Admittedly, the waves were a bit smaller but they were definitely still rideable. So, I figured I’d take advantage of the solitude and headed for the water as Scott watched me from the beach.

As I was sauntering out of the water an hour later happy as pie, a local approached Scott and said, “Bra, I was out surfing this break yesterday and I rode right over a huge Bronze Whaler (read: shark!). It freaked me out, bra! But the word spreads fast, so everyone was out of the water within 5 minutes and no one was eaten.” Ok, so it turns out no was around in the water today for a reason….

Happily, I didn’t get nibbled but I have to admit, it’s got me a bit nervous about getting back out there.

I really love reading your blog! The Fiji trip sounded great! Elaine and I want you to keep notes so we can book the 1st. place, not the second. We plan to go to Australia/Fiji early next year. Scout up some really 1st class [laces for us to go. I was thinking about Lizard Island as a good spot on the Great Barrier Reef. Stay safe and don't get eaten by a shark or bitten by a brown snake(very deadly). Don't forget, most sea snakes are very poisonous, but mild mannered. We'll talk again soon. Love, BJ and Elaine
