I never thought I'd say this but...

…NYC is a great place to train for triathlons. Say what???

I absolutely expected to find that training for a triathlon on the Gold Coast of Australia would totally kick butt versus training in NYC. Of course, I am excluding the fact that Terrier Tri isn’t here… :( But, in terms of the geography – places to run, ride and swim, I figured that there would be no comparison.

Admittedly, Oz does kick NYC’s butt when it comes to swimming. That may seem obvious – we’ve all heard about those people that have grown third ears after swimming in the Hudson - but the Aussies also have about as many Olympic sized pools here as Manhattan has Starbucks. People here laugh at the idea of swimming in 20m pools and sharing lanes!

But riding is a different story. We were totally excited to get back on our bikes (for the first time since last year) on Sunday. But by the end of the ride, we were frustrated. It was supposed to be a 40 mile ride, but when we hit the 2 hour mark and we had gone less than 25 miles, we decided to cut it short. Between the traffic, dead end roads, pedestrians, and parked cars, it just wasn’t fun. I found myself thinking wistfully of the rides to Nyack – with the GW Bridge and all! Who would have thought???

So between Central Park for running, the tri state area for riding (oh ya, and that awesome cool pool at Equinox), and most importantly our beloved Terrier team, I think I’d happily suck up the 150 laps in the 20m pool!

Remember, 90% of the people that live in Oz live within 5o miles of the coast. Do your biking more inland. I hope you are having a great time! Elaine and I will be rooting for ya'll in the 1/2 Ironman. BJ
