Just another day in paradise

From the moment we arrived in Fiji, we loved it! And it only got better and better when we arrived at Likuliku, after spending our first night on Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu. The resort was every bit as beautiful as we had hoped, and needless to say we had a fabulous 8-year anniversary celebration!

Although the promise of luxury and decadence is what brought us to Fiji, it is the people that make it truly fabulous. We have never been met with such hospitality and friendliness. The Fijians have a genuine warmth about them that easily carries over to those around them and they are always smiling!

The staff at Likuliku really took fabulous care of us. It was all the little things that made it special; most of the staff knows every guest’s name (Bula Helen! Bula Scott!), every afternoon, they delivered ice and fresh cookies (which were fantastic) to our bure, every morning the housekeepers wrote personalized notes to us wishing us a great day, and the simple attentiveness – like the day we went for an early morning swim in the pool and finding 2 towels waiting there for us when we got out (we hadn’t brought ours from the room). And then there is the singing. Singing is a big part of Fijian culture and it is terrific! Typically composed of three people all with guitars, they sang to us when we arrived, they sang to us at every meal, they sang to us on our anniversary, and they sang us a beautiful farewell song on the eve before we left. Actually, the farewell song is quite emotional and I was fighting tears as they sang it to us.

I was very sad to leave the island – not just because of the beauty and luxury, but because of the people. Over the course of the week, we joked around with the staff, chatted with them constantly, sang with them, and even played some beach volleyball with them. So, I was pretty emotional as we said our goodbyes ~ I really felt connected to them! All I know is that we definitely plan to return one day!

Oh, and by the way, did I mention the snorkeling? Best we’ve ever done in our lives! Beautiful, massive, colorful, clear coral reefs, with thousands of fish to boot. Any color you can imagine - blue, orange, yellow, green, pink, purple, orange – you could find it underwater. It was such a treat!
