Got the munchies?

The other day we went up the mountain in a hot-boxed gondola with 4 elderly people (it was quite funny, actually, as they all looked around at each other – trying to act like they didn’t know what that smell was….). Or perhaps I got it completely wrong and they were looking around to see if there was anymore left??? After all, we are in Whistler, BC. Where else do people celebrate dope-smoking Olympic snowboarders by naming parks after them? J Either way – and oddly enough -- that led us down a little trip down memory lane…

Scott spent a ski season out here working as a lifty between high school and university. So we decided to check out some of the places he used to hang out. I got to see the tiny a-frame cabin that he shared with 3 other guys at the time – not exactly a Blueberry Hill-style chalet, but he didn’t care – all that mattered to him at the time was his “$1000 necklace” (every employee gets a season’s pass). I also got to see where he spent his days working – at the Whistler village gondola base – and his nights partying – at Dusty’s (the bar, that is, Victoria… :) ).

I heard lots of stories from the good ole days. One, in particular, really gave me a kick. Shortly after starting to work as a lifty, Scott told me, very proudly :), that he had been promoted. In his new job, he was charged with the very important task of loading and unloading the food carts onto the gondola (to deliver food to the mountain top chalet). This turned out to be very fortunate, especially given that Scott only earned minimum wage (and therefore could barely afford food after buying beer). So, while loading the breakfast food into the gondola, he would ‘occasionally’ give ‘extra’ muffins the olde ‘one-timer’ and stuff ENTIRE jumbo-sized muffins into his mouth. I didn’t believe he could do it all in one go …till I saw it for myself!
